Richard (Dick) Lee Carr, 94, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2026, at his residence after a long and full life. He was born on February 13, 1932, in Boone, Iowa, the eldest son of Vern G. and Doris (Edmunds) Carr. A gathering of friends will be on Thursday, June 11 from 5 to 7 pm at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care in Ames. A memorial service with Military Honors will be at Story Memorial Gardens in Ames on Friday, June 12 at 10:00. Richard proudly served his country in the United States Navy from January 1951 to November 1954, stationed aboard the USS Perkins. His years in the service remained a meaningful and formative chapter of his life. Soon after returning home from the Navy, Richard met the love of his life. He married Betty Lee George on May 14, 1955, and together they shared a loving marriage of more than 53 years. They raised two children, Crys (Paul) Newsom of Wentzville, MO and Mike (Tammy) Carr of Ankeny, IA, who were his greatest joy. nd a proud great-grandfather to ten Great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and by his siblings Mary Maitland and Jim Carr both of Ames and by sister-in-law, Carmen Carr of Branson, MO. Richard lived in Ames, Iowa, for nearly his entire life before moving to Rock Creek Senior Living in Ankeny three years ago. He worked at the Iowa State University Power Plant for 35 years, where he was known for his dedication, reliability, and strong work ethic. During retirement, Richard kept himself busy by becoming a Golfsmith club maker. He traveled to Texas for two weeks to learn how to build and refurbish golf clubs--a skill he enjoyed sharing with friends and fellow golfers. When he wasn't making or repairing clubs, he could be found on the course--often daily--playing rounds of golf with his wife and friends at The Oaks Golf Course in Ames. Richard and Betty also traveled with friends to golf courses across the country, creating cherished memories along the way. Richard never met a stranger. He was known for his warm personality, quick wit, and the stories he loved to tell. An enthusiastic card player and natural storyteller, Richard brought laughter, friendship, and joy wherever he went. Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Carr; two sisters, Bobbie Stark and Phyllis Bryant; one brother, Jack Carr and his parents. He will be remembered for his kindness, his humor, strength, and the deep love he held for his family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the American Lung Association or the American Legion Post 37.
